Brothels in Delhi – A Case Study on Indian Prostitution
The brothels in Delhi offer the best and pure sexual pleasure to the women of India. These brothels in Delhi have always been an important source for the working women and they can earn a lot of money through these brothels in India. These brothels in India are not only for the domestic workers but they have also proved to be a good source of income for the out-of-work women in various cities of India. The main reason behind this phenomenon is that there is no law which prohibits a person from being employed by anyone as a sex worker. However, the conditions are not ideal and the working women are mostly treated inhumanely.
There was a time when the brothels in Delhi were earning huge amounts of money for the out-of-work people but at the same time there were countless sweatshops which created numerous problems for the women workers. The employers used to intimidate and abuse them through the use of harsh language and ill-treatment. The brothels in Delhi were closed down and the workers had to find alternate places to find jobs. This was really difficult for those women who had spent years working as domestic help in the big hotels and offices. During this time, the workers were not able to find a decent job that could help them to support their families.
When the incidents like harassment and abuse increased, the government took strict notice and started searching out the reasons behind these incidents. The investigations and survey results revealed that the main cause for this problem was the increase in number of sex workers in the cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai etc. The main culprit in this case was the NGOs which were offering the services of prostitution to the working girls.
When the workers found it hard to support their families due to the shortage of jobs, they used to seek the services of the brothels. From there, they were either earning a good living from brothels or earning less due to the negligence of the police and the government. From the year 1997, the punishment for anyone found involved in the prostitution business was a tough one. From a fine to the hanging of the prostitution worker, all these things happened. After the implementation of the new law, the brothels saw a decline in their business as no one will be willing to support the profession of prostitution anymore.
The closure of the brothels in Delhi and other cities was the first move of the government to control the menace of prostitution in the country. But this was only possible after educating the people about the dangers and disadvantages of supporting this profession. The workers and the students realized that being a prostitute is not an enjoyable profession and it was causing more harm to the country’s social as well as moral values.
The closure of the brothels was the beginning of the end for the brothels in Delhi. But even after this, the brothels in India can still be found in many places in the country such as Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai among others. And the worst part of this whole scenario is that along with the closing down of the brothels in Delhi, the government has not taken any steps to save the lives of the women who are trapped in the brothels. They are just left to fend for themselves while surviving on a meager income that does not even cover their daily expenses. Thus it is our responsibility to prevent the prostitution of women and to protect the lives of the women who have been trafficked.
